Conversion Day

Conversion Day

When moving from a smaller machine, such as the 125cc motorcycle you completed CBT on, to a larger bike for A2 or A license, there are many things to consider;

  • Weight
  • Size
  • Power
  • Braking
  • Tyre contact patch
  • Gyroscopic forces encountered with heavier wheels
  • Lever weighting
  • Body position
  • Acceleration

and many more.

For that reason, you’ll often hear our instructors talk about taking a ‘conversion day’.

A conversion day is exactly as it sounds; a day spent converting from a 125cc machine across to a 600cc machine, in order that you are ready for a training day.

There is no curriculum to a motorcycle conversion day, its based around your needs and requirements, and it progresses at your pace.  The conversion day can take place at our Keynsham or Clevedon branch, and can be conducted in groups of 2, or on a one-to-one basis.

The best bit about a conversion day?  Lots of motorbike riding!

Your day will generally start with a diagnostics session on a 125cc machine.  Don’t get stressed, but the instructor will want to see your skills before putting you onto anything bigger.  The session will revolve around some set skills, and your DVSA instructor will provide feedback and tips to improve the skills you already have.  You may venture out onto the road for some refresher riding, you may not.

Once you are refreshed and sleak on the 125cc motorcycle, your DVSA instructor will introduce you to the 600cc machine.

You’ll discuss the differences and get used to the weight of the machine both whilst sat aboard, and whilst wheeling the bike.

There may be some control and instrumentation differences between the larger machines and the smaller bikes you will have ridden previously.  Your DVSA instructor will go through these with you and answer any questions you may have.

The remainder of your day will be spent enjoying the abilities of a larger machine.  Slow speed control work and riding on the road in a variety of situations and conditions.  If you have any favourite routes you’d like to ride, be sure to ask your DVSA instructor to include them for you.

The end of this conversion day will see you ready to take on the challenges of the DVSA Module 1 training day, and you’ll be well on your way to being ready for the DVSA Module 2 motorcycle test also.
